Innovation investment pays off: MBIE data

An outcomes report released by MBIE last week highlights the exceptional returns generated by New Zealand's sustained investment into research commercialisation.

Over the past decade, government funding through the PreSeed Accelerator Fund (PSAF) and Commercialisation Partner Network (CPN) has delivered $1 billion in economic value for Aotearoa, with every $1 invested yielding a $13 return.

The data proves what we already know—investing in innovation works! A strong case for continued government investment to unlock even greater impact for New Zealand.

Meet Matt McKevitt 👋

Some of you may have already met Matt McKevitt, who recently joined the KiwiNet team as our new Venture Lead.

Matt is a seasoned strategy consultant, operations executive, entrepreneur and investor. His deep tech expertise includes co-leading a UK-based medical device and pharmaceutical company to a nine-figure valuation. What you may not know is that he also trained as a doctor!

Having previously mentored participants in our Emerging Innovator and Spin-out Programmes, Matt was keen to get more involved with KiwiNet and our shareholders.

We asked Matt for his key takeaways after a couple of months with us:

"What’s struck me is the talent and passion across Aotearoa’s research and commercialisation ecosystem. Despite the challenges of a resource-constrained system, we're achieving great things—and the untapped potential is immense.

New Zealand needs innovative ventures to transform its future and move beyond a commodity-driven economy. The world is calling for bold solutions to its greatest challenges. Turning great research into real-world impact is critical, and I’m excited to play my part in making that happen."

If you have ideas or insights on how we can accelerate venture creation in the KiwiNet ecosystem, Matt would love to hear from you—don’t hesitate to reach out!
